REVIEW: Fedde Le Grand @ UNIUN 1yr Anniversary #EDM #Toronto

Last Friday marked the one year anniversary of UNIUN Nightclub, in Toronto. Seems like it was just yesterday they had their GRAND OPENING. On hand to help celebrate this special occasion was non other than Dutch superstar Fedde Le Grand, a Toronto favourite. Unsurprisingly, it was a packed house, but that seems to be the norm for a Friday night at Uniun.

Here are a few pictures and a short video of the one year anniversary madness.

REVIEW: Diplo @ UNIUN Nightclub for #BudLightPlatinum (01.31.2013)

Last Thursday I was invited to a product launch by Bud Light for their new Platinum beer inside Uniun Nightclub. I generally don’t attend many Social Media functions, but since it was being held at a venue I’m mayor of on Foursquare, I felt it would be rude of me not too…ha! I don’t believe it was made known to the public, until the last minute, that Diplo would be the surprise dj. As a result, those who did hear the news were scrambling to get their names on the RSVP guestlist. Hundreds, if not thousands, stood outside in the blistering cold in a line that wrapped around the block. Unfortunately not everyone could be let in, as it was already a full house by 11pm. The opening Toronto based dj duo THUGLI played a stellar set and got the party started on the right note. It’s not my first time hearing these two, and definitely won’t be my last. They’ve made quite a name for themselves in the Toronto Trap scene, so much so that their name is synonymous with it, and rightfully so.

After THUGLI had wonderfully set the tone for the night just right, and by just right I mean a hot mess, Diplo had no problem taking over and delivering exactly what the crowd came to hear, all of his big releases and club anthems. I recall first seeing Philly based Diplo (aka Wesley Pentz) in Toronto in the mid 00’s, and although he’s found commercial success since then, he’s always stayed true to his style of playing a wide variety of genres throughout his sets. (e.g. reggae, hip hop, EDM, & more). It might not have been his best set, but he still managed to keep the crowd twerkin’ & expressing themselves way past their Thursday night curfew until almost 4am as Diplo ‘kept it gully’. As for the beer, very nice bottle, but I’m not a fan of the taste. Regardless, it didn’t stop me from drinking a little more than a 6 pack’s worth.

Here’s my video recap of the night:

REVIEW: UNIUN Nightclub Grand Opening #FACTORYfridays

Last night, Friday November the 2nd, marked the opening of Toronto’s hottest new nightclub. Located & nestled right in the heart of Toronto’s downtown core, UNIUN (pronounced Union, not Onion) is in a unique and inconspicuous location where Devil’s Martini, and before that Helium Nightclub, used to be. INK Entertainment’s latest venture brings a design and decor that this city hasn’t quite seen. The lighting is the first of its kind in Canada, and simply put…breathtaking. The lights are the first thing you notice the moment you step foot into the club. Hypnotic and mesmerizing, they seem to dance with the rhythm of the music that’s being played. The LED screens on each side of the club, plus the one across the front of the dj booth, add to the menagerie of eye candy that’s there to stimulate the senses, which it does effectively. Choosing Chus & Ceballos to be a part of UNIUN’s grand opening was a brilliant decision. With the ever growing international popularity of their sound and style, it was a perfect recipe to attract the underground House Music lovers, and occasional clubbers interested in checking out the city’s newest club.

Now, aside from all the pros, I think it’s only fair to say that something will have to be done about the lack of A/C near the DJ booth, because it was an oven up at the front of the club. The middle and back section were better, and not nearly as hot. I also found that the sound was best at these same locations. As far as the vibe and crowd were concerned, it was a wonderful mix of seasoned clubbers who were there to sweat and dance, and well dressed bottle service clientele. The immediate feeling you get when you enter UNIUN, is that it is no ordinary or typical Toronto club. It actually feels as if you’re not in Toronto at all to be honest, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Be Ready Toronto, UNIUN has raised the bar. Until the next event, see you on the dancefloor.
